About us

Maternal Journal is a global community movement.

We share creative tools and techniques to support the huge changes, joys and challenges we go through in pregnancy, birth and parenthood.

We've worked with some incredible artists, therapists, doulas and friends to make beautiful journaling resources for you to use.

Each step-by-step activity shows you how to make something for your journal. Choose from styles including poetry and prose writing to drawing and painting – all designed to fit in with the busy life of a parent.

We provide an inclusive and safe space for anyone who has experienced pregnancy, given birth, identifies as a mother or as a woman or non-binary carer.

How it started

Maternal Journal began in 2017 to bring creativity and connection to new mothers and birthing parents when they needed it most.

Laura is a mother, artist and midwife. On her community visits as a midwife, she was struck by how many people had nowhere to put their new emotions and experiences.

Working with a group of brilliant artists, she set up Maternal Journal to support people with a creative outlet and a friendly space to meet and connect.

Sam is a mother and communications specialist. She took one of Laura's first workshops and loved it. It was something different from the practical parenting conversations on nappy sizes and tog sizes. She joined the team to help bring the concept to more people.

Maternal Journal started out as workshops hosted by all kinds of amazing people. Now, groups are meeting all over the place, and there is a vibrant online community. Workshops have been hosted in more than 20 countries worldwide, and the movement continues to grow.
